Board Candidate: Diane Krapf

What skills and qualities do you have that uniquely qualify you for the Board of Directors, and why do you want to run for the Board?

I am passionate about health and wellness. I worked in the natural and organics industry for over thirty-eight years in the roles of Nutritionist, Home Economist, Category Manager, and Director of Sales, Marketing, and Procurement before retiring five years ago. My career in the food industry has helped me develop strategic thinking, organizational, and communication skills and given me experience working with nonprofit, privately and publicly held companies. Now, I would like to increase my involvement in the community that is my home.

Choose one of the seven goals of the Co-op strategic plan and briefly talk about what interests you and what you could contribute to its development.

It is a hard choice to select just one, but I settled on Healthy Food Access, which I can support through outreach to the vendor community. I want to help develop innovative strategies and partnerships to facilitate educational efforts regarding good nutrition and choices.

Think about a situation that demonstrates your ability to create a climate that values cultural diversity. How would you encourage sharing different perspectives?

I live my life engaging with and welcoming exposure to all cultures and lifestyles through relationships, travel, and cuisines. I appreciate and respect differences in people.

What do you believe are the Co-op’s greatest strengths?

The Co-op provides consistent, healthy food and personal care items to the local community at a competitive price. The Co-op sets itself apart because of its staff’s ability to develop personal relationships with consumers.

Describe any experience you have in reading and understanding financial statements.

I have a good aptitude for financials, as I was always responsible for the sales, marketing, and profits of the business units I managed.

Describe the experience, skills, or knowledge you have working with any or all of the following:

Cooperatives; policy governance; consensus process, non-profit or for-profit boards; a group that used active member participation to achieve its goals.

I worked in the Food and Nutrition Department of Virginia Mason Medical Center, a nonprofit teaching hospital, from 1980 to 1994. I coordinated a buying club with neighbors utilizing Mountain People’s warehouse in Seattle in the mid-1980s. I served as an Executive Board Member for the start-up of the Sudden Valley Barn Theatre in the early 1990s. I currently serve on the Governance Committee and as the Secretary of the local nonprofit Animals as Natural Therapy.

Describe your connections with the community, including volunteer work if applicable.

I have done volunteer work with the Seattle Public Schools PIPE program, including individual tutoring. I have also volunteered with the American Heart Association, the Bellingham Public Schools Junior Achievement program, and the Sudden Valley Barn Theatre. I am currently in my fifth year as both a volunteer and Board Secretary for Animals as Natural Therapy.
