Board Candidate: Diane Krapf

What skills and qualities do you have that uniquely qualify you for the Board of Directors, and why do you want to run for the Board?

I am passionate about health and wellness. I am educated, trained and worked in the Natural/ Organic industry for 38+ years in roles of Nutritionist, Home Economist, Category Manager, Director of Sales, Marketing and Procurement before retiring 7 years ago. My career skills across varying aspects of the food industry demonstrate proven expertise in strategic' big picture' thinking, organizational skills and communication within non-profit, privately and publicly held companies. I love our home and lifestyle in Bellingham and I wish to have positive engagement in our community.

Choose one of the seven goals of the Co-op strategic plan and briefly talk about what interests you and what you could contribute to its development.

Healthy Food Access appeals to me the most. I am able to support the Co-op's efforts to highlight our local producers/ suppliers and in providing education to our community about the value of buying local and organic.

Think about a situation that demonstrates your ability to create a climate that values cultural diversity. How would you encourage sharing different perspectives?

I live my daily life engaging and welcoming exposure to all cultures/ lifestyles through relationships, travel, and cuisines. I appreciate and respect differences in all people.

What do you believe are the Co-op’s greatest strengths?

Offering consistent healthy food and personal care products within the local community at a competitive price while supporting sustainable practices.

Describe any experience you have in reading and understanding financial statements.

I have a good aptitude for financials through my past business unit work responsibilities in sales, marketing and procurement.

Describe the experience, skills, or knowledge you have working with any or all of the following:

Cooperatives; policy governance; consensus process, non-profit or for-profit boards; a group that used active member participation to achieve its goals.

I currently serve on the Community Co-op Board that utilizes policy governance and consensus process.

Describe your connections with the community, including volunteer work if applicable.

In the mid-1980s, I coordinated a buying club with neighbors utilizing Mountain People's warehouse in Seattle. I have volunteered in the Seattle Public Schools PIPE program and tutoring program, American Heart Association, Bellingham Public schools and Junior Achievement. In the early 1990s, I served as an Executive Board member for the start-up of the Sudden Valley Barn Theatre. I currently (for last 7+ years) serve on the local non-profit Animals As Natural Therapy Board as Chair/ President and on the Internal Affairs Committee.
