What skills and qualities uniquely qualify you for the Board of Directors, and why do you want to run for the Board?

I am a dedicated and seasoned Community Outreach Specialist with a superior record of successful community service and engagement. I helped create inclusive celebrations for Juneteenth Freedom Day and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Unity Ball, which mark the beginning of two new Bellingham traditions! I’m adept at working with a variety of community demographics to formulate beneficial programs and resolutions.

Choose one of the six Co-op strategic plan goals and briefly explain why it interests you and what you could contribute to its development.

I am keenly interested in the Community Engagement goal. As pressures on community-based organizations increase and the issues faced by our society become more complex, the idea of cross-organization partnerships hold much promise. Through partnerships, the Co-op can contribute our part while also reaping the benefits of others’ efforts to accelerate learning, distribute skills and knowledge, and add depth and breadth to our community impact.
 
As a community organizer, I would contribute by building relationships and trust with the community, and use my skills to foster successful partnerships and bring ideas to the community and the Co-op.

What do you believe are the Co-op’s greatest strengths?

The Co-op’s greatest strength comes from the hearts of its member-owners, employees, and directors, which in my opinion makes it a great leader in the community. As a member, I understand that I am investing in an organization that listens to my needs and the needs of other members. When shopping at the Co-op, there seems to be something for everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions or choices, and it gives me the feeling of not being left out or forgotten.

Describe your experience reading and understanding financial statements.

I understand how to check for trends in top-line sales, major expenses, and bottom-line income; analyze balance sheets and cash flow statements; and adjust historical accounting values to reflect today's economic reality.

Describe your experience, skills, or knowledge working with any or all of the following: cooperatives, policy governance, nonprofit or for-profit boards, or groups that use active member participation to achieve their goals.

I possess many amazing skills when it comes to working on various nonprofit cooperative boards, but two that are very near and dear to me are communication and teamwork.  

Communication is a two-way process: listening skills and assertiveness. It’s a building block for all cooperative skills and is vital for good meetings and negotiations with other members. My communication skills provide a boost to the day-to-day running of any cooperative in areas such as community organizing, customer care, and marketing.  
 
When it comes to teamwork, I recognize individual roles, behaviors, and skills, and employ techniques for galvanizing any team around common goals.

Describe your connections with the community, including volunteer work, if applicable.

I learned about the Co-op in 2016 when I first arrived in Bellingham. I loved the all the different selections and the desire to focus on local and to meet everyone’s dietary needs. I had the honor of working with the Co-op to sponsor two diversity events that I hosted in Bellingham. The Co-op assisted me with bringing together an inclusive community to celebrate the Juneteenth American National Holiday Freedom Day and the 2109 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Unity Ball, which mark the beginning of two new Bellingham traditions!

Describe your background with and commitment to organic and natural foods.

My commitment to organic and natural foods goes far beyond myself. I believe that cost is the greatest obstacle low-income individuals face in accessing fresh and especially organic and locally produced food. Daily, I support individuals and their families with tastier and healthier food choices by showing them healthier and affordable ways to commit to eating organic and natural foods.

What committee/s are you most interested in serving on and what skills and experience would you bring?

Member Affairs Committee: I am a highly conscientious and seasoned Community Development Worker with an excellent community service record and a strong work ethic.
  • Adept in utilizing social media networks to identify new opportunities for fundraising and community outreach efforts.
  • Able to explain and promote a wide variety of community programs and activities to audiences of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
